Scarlet Fever/Scarlatina

Description

Scarlet Fever is a bacterial (streptococcal) throat infection with an incubation period of 1-5 days.

Symptoms

  • Sore throat
  • Fever
  • Loss of appetite and vomiting
  • Later – red rash (like a red flush), beginning on the chest or neck and then spreading.
  • The mouth area has no spots so looks particularly pale against the rash.
  • Strawberry tongue – white tongue with projecting red spots.

Treatment

As it is a bacterial infection, antibiotics are given by the doctor.
