The Royal Academy of Dance and The Jack Petchey Foundation

Present

Step LIVE!

Sunday July 11 2010 at Sadler’s Wells

Step into Dance, the unique open access dance initiative presents Step LIVE! - An annual celebration of young and dynamic dance talent in the capital. Through a partnership between the Royal Academy of Dance and The Jack Petchey Foundation, Step into Dance enables 100 secondary schools across 13 London boroughs to provide 11-16 year olds with extra-curricular classes. An eclectic array of styles include Contemporary, Street Dance, Jazz, Capoeira, Jive, Bollywood, Breakdance and more.

Step LIVE! aims to get everybody dancing; Mums, Dads, Aunts, Uncles, Brothers or Sisters – on Sunday July 11 the project will take over Sadler’s Wells and fill every space on every level with fun, laughter, music and dance. Activities include boomwhacking, body percussion, Salsa and Spanish dance and features Breakers Beat boxers and even ‘Flash mobbers’ – This is an all-encompassing experience and an event for all the family.

Programme Leader and Artistic Coordinator Sue Goodman says: “Having Sadler’s Wells as our venue this year has certainly raised the bar. Both our teachers and dancers have been working really hard in order to be able to participate in Step Live! It has been thrilling to watch the development of our dancers – especially those with special needs – who have often exceeded all expectations”. With events running throughout the year, Step LIVE! is Step into Dance’s ultimate showcase, offering both male and female dancers an opportunity to perform at Sadler’s Wells, one of London’s most prestigious venues. Now the biggest secondary school dance programme in the capital, students are nurtured and encouraged to develop their skills and potential as well as pursue their passion for dance, frequently choreographing as well as performing their own work.

For the past four years, Step into Dance has been renowned for mentoring young talent who would not otherwise have access to such an extensive range of dance styles or to qualified dance teachers. The programme particularly seeks to involve male students and non-able bodied young people with special educational needs and results have exceeded all expectations. Step into Dance continues to grow and develop just as the wider, public interest and in dance is gathering momentum and inspiring the whole nation.

This year Step into Dance’s Gifted & Talented group will perform a specially choreographed piece in association with the Jasmin Vardimon Company as the finale to Step LIVE! celebrating 10 years of the Jack Petchey Foundation.

The foundation’s Chief Operating Officer Trudy Kilcullen says: “The Jack Petchey Foundation continues to be proud of its partnership with the Royal Academy of Dance. ‘Step into Dance’ is now responsible for giving over 2,000 young people the opportunity to engage with dance, perform and develop their confidence and self-belief. Many of these young people have NEVER danced before. Increasingly we are seeing evidence that the skills they are learning in the studio and on stage with their peers are positively affecting other areas of their school and personal lives, helping to shape them into more rounded, confident and socially responsible young adults”

In addition, the Royal Academy of Dance celebrates its 90th anniversary this year so 2010’s Step LIVE! promises to be the most exciting programme yet.

Step LIVE! is also part of Big Dance 2010
